A Clicking Sound in My Hard Drive

Postby Sean » Fri Dec 25, 2009 3:27 pm

These days, my hared drive is always clicking when I use it. The sound worried me very much. I don't know what happened to my computer or my external hard drive. I just bought it a few months ago. It happened frequently. Sometimes, my computer locks up with the clicking sound. That means my external hard drive was bad?
Usually, a clicking sound stands for bad thing. Probably, a terrible thing will happen. The important thing that should do is back up my hard drive. Once the dives destroyed, I can use the data in my hard drive. Thought, I am not sure what will happen. Just backup my drive so that it won't make thing worse even if the hard drive get bad. Later, I check my hard drive by restart my computer and start it in Safe- Mode by press the ctrl key. Then run and type CHKDSK C: /F /R then press Enter. R tells CHKDSK to scan the bad sectors and the F means to resolve the problem. The CHKDSK also offer to "convert lost chains to files" to recover my data. Or fix something. I just accept. Finally, I restart my computer as usual. To my surprise, the clicking sound is disappeared. All run well. If the click returns, the drive could be damaged. But before we throw away the drive, we have another method to check it. If our hard drive is non-level surface, it will not work. So we should turn off the computer and make sure the hard drive is in perfect condition. Most likely, the click will be gone if the hard drive is not damaged. The clicking sound may means there is something wrong with our hard drive. It is not damaged for sure. So we must pay attention to the sound.
